Research and Development

marine & naval engineering >>

Research and development is a central part of Umoe Mandal’s technological capability. More than 30 years of experience, combined with close collaboration with leading academic institutions, industry experts, and demanding customers, has contributed to a deep understanding of highly specialized technologies and production methods.

Through long-term cooperation with partners such as the Royal Norwegian Navy and the US Navy, Umoe Mandal has researched, designed, built, and delivered high-speed vessels and advanced components in all-composite FRP materials. This work spans new warship designs, acoustic and magnetic properties, shock design, stealth technologies, weight and structural strength optimization, as well as autonomy and seaborne drone systems focused on robust, scalable, and operationally relevant solutions.

Research and development activities are supported by a dedicated Innovation Hub that brings together engineers, domain experts, and external partners to accelerate concept development, prototyping, testing, and integration. The Innovation Hub enables cross-disciplinary collaboration and technology maturation from early concepts to deployable capabilities, while ongoing material research and testing programs support the development of composite materials and new commercial vessel designs.

Marine and Naval Engineering

Umoe Mandal’s engineering capability is founded on strong competence in naval architecture and marine engineering. Our multidisciplinary team covers all relevant engineering disciplines and delivers complete ship design and build processes for both naval and commercial vessels, as well as specialized component designs across marine, offshore, land-based, and defense sectors.

Engineering services span the entire development process, from early concept design and specification development to detailed design for new constructions and conversions. This includes interior and exterior outfitting for a wide range of vessel types and advanced structures. Emphasis is placed on intelligent, efficient, practical, safe, and environmentally responsible solutions.

Design work is supported by advanced tools and LEAN design methodologies aimed at reducing development time and cost without compromising quality. Analysis, calculations, and testing are performed to meet applicable local and international classification rules and regulations. Many of the design principles and building techniques applied are derived from state-of-the-art practices within the aircraft and automotive industries.

Composite Materials

Umoe Mandal specializes in the design and manufacture of components and large structures in all-composite materials. These materials enable vessels and structures with high structural strength and very low weight for advanced applications across marine, offshore, aquaculture, land-based, and defense industries.

For nearly three decades, the company has refined the design and production of vessels and large structures using composite sandwich construction. Delivered solutions include a wide range of fibre-reinforced polymer composites, combining different resins, fibres, reinforcements, and core materials to meet specific operational and regulatory requirements.

Advanced manufacturing processes allow for flexible combinations of core materials and skin alternatives, enabling tailored performance characteristics. Composite materials contribute to durability, reduced maintenance, extended service life, and lower overall lifecycle cost. Their inherent properties support strength, stiffness, environmental resistance, and the integration of sensor and stealth technologies, while maintaining a reduced environmental footprint.

Air-cushion Catamaran and SES Technology

Air-cushion catamaran design and Surface Effect Ship (SES) technology form a core part of Umoe Mandal’s vessel expertise. By combining lift, air-cushion support, and catamaran hull geometry, this design concept enables high speed, stability, and exceptional seakeeping. The use of all-composite hull materials further reduces structural weight.

SES technology integrates features from both hovercraft and catamaran designs. Unlike conventional hovercraft, SES vessels do not rely on speed to rise in the water. Large lift fans generate an air cushion contained between twin hulls by flexible seals at the bow and stern, maintaining pressure even at standstill.

The defining advantage of SES technology lies in the combination of high speed and excellent seakeeping. Reduced wave impact, partial lifting of the vessel out of the water, and the shock-absorbing effect of the air cushion contribute to improved performance, lower wave resistance, reduced fuel consumption, and improved environmental efficiency compared to monohull vessels.
